About us

At a glance

The Colluli Mining Share Company (CMSC) is a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of the State of Eritrea and Danakali Limited, a company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

The Eritrean government is interested in the Project through ENAMCO’s 50% shareholding and will benefit from any revenue that CMSC may produce. The company aligns with the government’s development ambitions, including the Colluli project, which is expected to benefit the broader Eritrean economy. Further, taxes and royalties are payable to the Eritrean government under the Mining Agreement and the Mining Licences, which would also be expected to benefit the Eritrean economy, alongside jobs and skills.

Such equal partnerships from early projects are rare in the mining sector, especially in Africa. In addition to the financial resource flows, there is an additional dimension. Because the project outputs are fertilisers, the Project has the potential to benefit Eritrea and Africa.

Why our work matters

Agriculture in Eritrea and Africa has a massive social and economic footprint. More than 60 per cent of sub-Saharan Africa’s population is smallholder farmers, and about 23 per cent of sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP comes from agriculture. Yet, Africa’s full agricultural potential remains untapped.

It is estimated that around 1.5 million people directly work in the agriculture sector in Eritrea, representing around 60% of the country’s total labour force. Because of that, around 80%-90% of the population has a direct connection with the sector, evidencing how important this economic activity is for the national sustainable development agenda.

Colluli’s fertilisers could have significant implications to boost some specific types of crops and make an impact in terms of productivity and diversity of crops. While Colluli alone cannot transform the entire economy because of the size of the deposit, there is significant potential to boost the national economy and transform agriculture. It is through these complex pathways the impact of the Colluli will translate into the final SDG outcomes.
